One of three men accused of stealing canine and
human ashes in late 2010 was sentenced to more than eight years in prison on
Friday.
According to Sun-Sentinel, Jose Diaz-Marrero, 20,
and two others, ages 18 and 21, allegedly burglarized a home in Silver Springs
Shoresin 2010 and they allegedly took items such as
electronics and
jewelry. They were also accused of taking urns
that had the remains of the homeowner’s father and her two beloved Great
Danes.
Detectives who invetigated the case said the men
said they took the
urns because they thought they contained crushed up pills.
They then decided to taste and then snort the ashes. The men allegedly told
detectives they realized what they had snorted after they saw a story that was
published in the Star-Banner, according to Ocala.
Diaz-Marrero said he knows he made a big mistake and
that he wished that the victims were at court so he could tell them how sorry he
was.
