A 5-year-old boy was turned away from Roberts Road Elementary School in Hockley, Texas. because school officials say his hair is too long. His mom, Ursula Martin, said that when she tried to enroll her son, she was told that her son’s hair needed to be cut first. Apparently, the school’s dress code does not allow for a boy’s hair to go beyond a shirt collar. Martin contends that her son’s hair is a religious statement.

Martin commented, “I don’t understand. What does the length of his hair have to do with him being educated?”

The school district responded by releasing a statement that said: “The principal of each campus shall apply the grooming code and make all final decisions regarding what is acceptable and appropriate, considering the age and activities of the students. Guidelines and administrative decisions regarding appropriate dress will reflect concern for health and safety of students and the influence of specific dress or grooming on the overall educational climate of the school.”

Man Arrested After Shooting A Police Officer In The Face

A 20-year-old with a long history of arrests was charged with shooting a recent Atlanta police recruit in the face during a foot chase Friday night.

Frank Emmitt Nance was booked into the Fulton County Jail overnight and charged with nine criminal counts, including aggravated assault against a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine.

Nance, of Atlanta, is charged with shooting Officer Reggie Robinson in the face around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Lee Street.

Robinson, 35, graduated from the police academy in November and was dispatched to the southwest Atlanta neighborhood Friday night to investigate possible drug activity. He gave chase when a suspicious man ran from him and was shot moments later, police say.

Robinson was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition, said police spokesman John Chafee.

Records show Nance has been in and out of the Fulton County Jail several times over the last four years, including an arrest in April on assault and battery charges. He waived his first court appearance Saturday morning and was ordered held without bond until his preliminary hearing scheduled on January 25.

Police would not say how Nance sustained injuries evident in his mug shot taken Friday night. APD spokesman Gregory Lyon said the department’s internal review board will investigate all aspects of the shooting — as they do any time an officer is involved in a shooting — to ensure all policies and procedures were followed.

Woman Gets Arrested After Stealing Police Cruiser And Fleeing To McDonalds

 Vanessa Brooks, a 22-year-old Florida woman was jailed Saturday after she allegedly stole a cell phone, stole an officer's patrol car and then fled to a McDonalds in Tampa.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, police had been called to a St. Petersburg apartment complex on a domestic violence complaint when one of the officers left his patrol car running because a fight was in progress at the scene.

Another officer arrived on the scene and parked directly behind the first officer, but did not leave the keys in the car.

While the officers were dealing with the domestic dispute, Brooks flagged down a motorist on a nearby road - then reached into his vehicle, grabbed a cell phone out of his car and then fled on foot.

She then ran to a nearby apartment building, where police were dealing with the domestic dispute case. She got into the running police cruiser, backed into the parked cruiser, then took off with the vehicle. The officers were unaware of the incident until they were finished with the domestic case.

According to the Tampa Bay Police Department, the stolen cruiser was spotted by officers around 10:00 p.m. with Brooks sitting in the driver's seat. When Brooks saw an officer approach her, she jumped out of the patrol car and fled on foot. She was apprehended a short distance away.

Brooks was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail and charged with grand theft auto, obstructing an officer, and burglary.

Deaf Man Stabbed After His Sign Language Was Mistaken For Gang Signs

A deaf man in Burlington, North Carolina was stabbed when another man mistook his sign language for throwing up gang signs, Wednesday (Jan. 9).

The misunderstanding occurred at around 5 p.m. Witnesses told police that the victim, 45-year-old Terrance Ervin Daniels, got into an altercation with another deaf man, and was (of course) using sign language. He was then approached by Jarell Neal who stabbed him multiple times.

Daniels collapsed in the grass where he was found by emergency personnel and transported to Alamance Regional Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.

With the help of a witness, Cathy Sanford, who said that Neal was walking around the neighborhood after the attack, police were able to track him down. Sanford said she was at home when she heard her dog barking and looked in her back yard where she saw Neal running through it. He apparently came back to Sanford's house later in the day and threatened her 12-year-old granddaughter.

A warrant was obtained for Neal's arrest and the 22-year-old was apprehended a few hours later. As of yesterday, he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and felonious assault on a handicapped person.

Neal is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond at the Burlington Police Department.

Ironically, even though he thought Daniels was throwing up gang signs, Burlington Police staff Sgt. Mark Yancey revealed that Neal isn't even in a gang, so it is unclear what his motive may have been.

Former Death Row Inmate Admits To Killing His 89-Year-Old Mother

A former death row inmate who said he killed his own mother turned himself in to Vallejo police Wednesday, police said.

The man, identified as 70-year-old Dennis Stanworth, called police at 11:55 a.m. to report the death.

Officers responded to his home in the 2500 block of Marshfield Road. Police said that once there, Stanworth brought them to the woman's body.

The woman's identity has not been confirmed, but police believe she was Nellie Turner Stanworth, 89, the suspect's mother.

Stanworth was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of murder.

Police said he pleaded guilty in 1966 to kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing two teenage girls in Contra Costa County.

He was sentenced to death, but later his sentence was reversed and he was given a life sentence. He was then paroled and registered with Valljeo police as a sex offender.

Detectives Track Down Burglar By Following A Trail Of Cheetos Crumbs He Left Behind

 Austin Lee Westfall Presler, a 19-year-old South Carolina man, was jailed after he allegedly broke into a local store, then left a trail of Cheetos crumbs to his residence where deputies tracked him down.

According to the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office, Presler reportedly smashed the glass front door at the Cassatt Country Store and stole beer, cigarettes, energy drinks, and a few snacks for the road.

During the burglary, Presler allegedly grabbed a bag of Cheetos that broke open while he was inside the store. The broken bag left Cheetos crumbs on the floor of the store before he fled the scene. The store's surveillance camera captured video that showed Presler fleeing in a white car.

Investigators say deputies began searching the area on foot, and were led to a nearby home with a white car parked in front, similar to the one used in the burglary.

When officers approached the front door, they spotted more Cheetos laying on the porch. They searched the residence, and found Presler in a room, as well as the items he had stolen from the store.

Presler was booked into the Kershaw County Detention Center and charged with second-degree burglary. He was released after posting $15,000 bond.

According to court records, Presler has previous arrests that include possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and driving with a suspended driver's license.

 Matthew Abram Rader, a 30-year-old Oregon man was jailed last Wednesday after he allegedly tattooed his 15-year-old girlfriend's vagina for her birthday.

According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Rader began having sex with a girl when she was 14-year-old, then gave her three tattoos for her 15th birthday.

The tattoos included a butterfly and a skull on the girl's neck, as well as a tattoo of his name next to her vagina.

Investigators say they found dozens of sexually explicit text messages that had been exchanged between Rader and the girl.

Detectives logged onto the girl's Facebook page, with her permission, and engaged Rader in a conversation. Detectives, posing as the girl, asked Rader if he still had naked photographs of the girl that had been taken with his cell phone.

Rader allegedly answered back that he no longer had the photographs, but wanted new photographs of the girl's body, nipples, face and vagina.

In reference to the vagina photograph, Rader reportedly added "after all ... my name IS on it."

Rader was booked into jail and charged with third-degree rape and sodomy, second-degree online corruption of a minor and one count of using a child in display of sexually explicit conduct.

Cameroon Court Acquits Two Men Who Were Imprisoned For ‘Looking Gay’

 A Cameroon appeals court has acquitted two men found guilty of homosexuality because they wore women’s clothes and ordered Bailey’s Irish Cream, according to rights groups.

Jonas Kimie and Franky Ndome were arrested outside a nightclub and sentenced to five years in prison in November 2011.

“The acquittal of two Cameroonian men jailed for looking gay because they wore women’s clothes exposes the systematic discrimination against perceived homosexuals in the country,” Amnesty International said in a statement.

Woman Gets 15 Years In Prison For Robbing White Castle With A Squirt Gun

 Michelle White, a 33-year-old St. Louis woman has been sentenced to jail time after she allegedly crawled through the window of a White Castle fast food restaurant and then robbed the employees with a squirt gun.

According to police, White drove up to a White Castle drive through window in September 2011, displayed a red squirt gun and then passed the cashier a note that said "give me your money or I will shoot you."

When the cashier fled the window, White crawled into the restaurant through the drive-thru window and then took the cash drawer. An off-duty firefighter parked in the drive-through lane wrote down White's driver's license number and called 911.

Officers later went to White's home and found a white jacket that she had worn during the robbery and a sum of cash. White attempted to evade arrest by climbing to the roof of her apartment building and then jumping off. She fractured her arm, leg and pelvis as a result.

White, who has three children, eventually confessed to the robbery while she was in the hospital.

White has now been convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbery with special conditions.

Those conditions include a long list of previous convictions including manslaughter, possession of drug paraphernalia and stealing. The manslaughter charge was a result of striking a man with her vehicle while she was high on cocaine.

Teacher Charged With Having Sex With A Student

Kristina Ngum, a 43-year-old teacher and cheerleading coach at Myers Park High School, was jailed Saturday after she allegedly had sex with a male student.

According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, an investigation was launched Friday after deputies found drugs on a student that Ngum allegedly had a sexual relationship with.

During an investigation into the drug charge, deputies determined that Ngum had engaged in a sexual relationship with the student.

One source stated that the student was in Ngum's car when she was stopped on Friday. Deputies reportedly searched the student during the stop and found drugs in his possession. Ngum was arrested the next day when detectives called her down to the station to provide a statement. This additional information has not been confirmed by the Sheriff's Office, however.

Investigators have not released the student's age, or how Ngum and the student know each other. The alleged sexual encounter is believed to have occurred off school grounds.

Ngum was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail and charged with one count of sexual activity with a student. Her bond has been set at $2,500.

According to court records, Ngum was arrested in July 2011 and charged with false pretenses and misdemeanor larceny. She was also arrested in 2008 on a charge of driving while impaired.

Natasha Stewart, 39, was wanted for questioning by the Hinds County Sheriff's Department for the death of a woman in Jackson, Mississippi who was injected with concrete in her buttocks. Stewart was arrested on Thursday, January 3, and charged with Fugitive from Justice Warrant for Homicide.

A mom who reported that her son with autism was missing was arrested after police found the boy and his younger sibling at home, living in deplorable conditions.

It's unclear why Christina Milligan, 30, called 911 on Sunday to report that her 9-year-old son had vanished, because police found him later that day in the bedroom of the family's Sacramento apartment, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Officials say the child was wearing urine-soaked clothing, according to station KCRA.

Cockroaches scampered around the apartment and dirty diapers and trash lay on the floor, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Milligan was arrested the same day, and the boy and his 2-year-old sibling were taken into protective custody, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Milligan was charged with suspicion of child endangerment.

Twin brothers were arrested on New Year's Eve after they fought over whose turn it was to have sex with the girlfriend they shared, police said Thursday.

Aric Ryan Hale and Sean Peter Hale, both 28, have an open dating relationship with a 27-year-old woman, according to police.

She told police she is sexually intimate with each brother, "depending on who she chooses to be with that particular day," police spokesman Capt. Christopher Davis said.

The three were in a local hotel when Sean Hale asked his brother to leave the room so and he and the woman could have sex, Davis said. Aric Hale refused and the two started swinging punches at each other and trashing the room, Davis said.

Police arrested the brothers later at an Ellington residence. Aric Hale was charged with two counts each of third-degree assault and disorderly conduct and one count of third-degree criminal mischief. Sean Hale was charged with two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of third-degree criminal mischief.

The brothers each posted bail of $10,000 and both are slated to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Feb. 7.

Man Charged With Murdering His Father, Then Burning The Body After An Argument Over His Room Being Messy

 Baron Von Duke Vercruysse, a 23-year-old Florida man, was jailed Tuesday after he allegedly killed his father and burned his body after the two argued over the cleanliness of his room.

According to police, Vercruysse and his father were arguing on New Year's Eve when Vercruysse grabbed his father's legs and pushed him to the ground.

Investigators say the victim, identified as 52-year-old Rene Vercruysse, struck his head during the fall and sustained a head injury.

Baron Vercruysse then allegedly dragged his father's body from the master bathroom to an area near his father's bed in the master bedroom. Vercruysse then grabbed a container of gasoline from the garage, doused his father's body with it and then set him on fire.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the family's home at 10:20 p.m. after neighbors saw the blaze.

Medical examiners determined that the victim had sustained several injuries, including the head injury, before his body was set on fire. A warrant for Baron Vercruysse's arrest was issued a short time later.

Vercruysse was located, booked into the Pasco County Jail and charged with first-degree murder.

Vercruysse has been arrested multiple times in Pinellas County on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of alcohol by a minor, drunk driving, and possession of oxycodone.

Man Arrested For Stealing A Honey Bun From 7-Eleven

Brandon Phillips, an 18-year-old Palm Bay man was jailed after he allegedly stole an iced honey bun from a local 7-eleven.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Phillips reportedly entered the store and stuffed the $1.29 pastry down his pants.

The store clerk attempted to confront Phillips over the threat, however, Phillips hopped onto an awaiting "getaway bicycle" and fled the scene.

Investigators say an officer spotted Phillips a short time later and deployed a canine unit to catch him. The alleged "getaway bicycle" was located between two houses a short distance away.

The store clerk positively identified Phillips as the suspect and he was apprehended. The honey bun was never found.

Phillips was booked into the Brevard County Jail and charged with retail petit theft, resisting arrest without violence, and resisting in the recovery of merchandise. He is currently being held in lieu of a $1,001.29 bond.

 William Nokes, a 45-year-old Michigan man, was jailed Christmas day after he allegedly had sex with his adult biological daughter on at least three occasions.

According to Michigan State Police, an investigation was launched last September when Nokes' daughter filed a complaint alleging that she and her father had engaged in sexual intercourse while she was visiting him in Farwell over the 4th of July Holiday.

The complaint was sent to the Mt. Pleasant State Police post in October, prompting them to interview Nokes.

During the interview, Nokes reportedly admitted to having sex with his daughter on three occasions. Two instances were in Clare County and a third instance in Clinton County.

Armed with a confession, the prosecutor's office filed charges and a warrant was issued for Nokes' arrest.

The warrant could not be served immediately, however, since Nokes was out of town on business. He was taken into custody on Tuesday night (Christmas Day) after he returned home for the holiday.

Nokes was booked into the Clare County Jail and charged with three felony counts of criminal sexual conduct 3rd degree (incest). His bond has been set at $60,000.

Investigators have not released details about the nature of the sexual conduct or why only one party was taken into custody. A preliminary examination of the case has been set for January 7.

Man Who Lived With Girlfriend’s Corpse For 6 Months Gets Convicted Of Killing Her

A Stockton man who lived with his girlfriend’s badly decomposed body in a bathtub for several months was convicted of her murder on Wednesday.

Devon Omar Epps, 37, was arrested in December 2011 after the apartment manager went to evict him and discovered the body of Veronica Jones in the bathtub of the unit on E. Channel Street.


The jury found Epps guilty of all charges: premeditated murder, use of weapon other than a firearm, rape, murder by torture and corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant.

Epps will be back in the San Joaquin County courtroom Thursday for the sanity phase of his trial. A judge ordered a mental evaluation for Epps after he acted strangely in court during his arraignment.

DUI Motorist Arrested After Plowing Through Fatal Accident Scene

Police arrested a woman suspected of driving under the influence after she allegedly drove past officers and crime scene tape, and into the scene of a fatal accident.

On the night of December 26, police were investigating the fatality near S.W. 59th Street and Youngs in Oklahoma City. Patrol cars, with their emergency lights flashing, had blocked off eastbound S.W. 59th Street. An officer suddenly heard several people yelling, and turned around to see a white car driving past the patrol cars and crime-scene tape.

Several officers tried to get the driver to stop, but the woman behind the wheel did not acknowledge them. According to the police report, one officer was nearly hit by the car but jumped out of the way just in time.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Thomasine Harjo, eventually stopped the car. When Harjo opened her car door, officers smelled the odor of alcohol on her breath; but when they asked her if she'd been drinking, Harjo said no.

Police also asked Harjo why she didn't stop when she saw the police barricade. She told them she was just following the car in front of her, although there was no other vehicle in the area.

Police arrested Harjo. She told them she couldn't go to jail because she had to make a court appearance in the morning. When the officer asked her what the court appearance was for, she replied, "DUI."

Harjo was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on complaints of DUI, driving without a state driver's license, and obstruction.
